ZBM Law is dedicated to delivering exceptional criminal defence and prison law services with a steadfast commitment to justice. Led by Zoe Butcher-McGunnigle, an experienced criminal defence barrister, brings both expertise and empathy to every case.
Zoe has built her career on a foundation of robust legal education and diverse professional experience. She earned her Juris Doctor from RMIT University in Melbourne with Distinction, complemented by degrees in Philosophy and Criminology from the University of Auckland. Since being admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor in both New Zealand and Australia in 2020, Zoe has successfully handled a wide range of criminal cases, including matters of violence, sexual, drug, driving, dishonesty, and more.
Since commencing practice in 2020, Zoe has honed her skills in advocacy, evidence analysis, legal research, trial work and sentencing, with a special interest in discharge without conviction applications. Her passion lies in securing the best outcomes for her clients, blending tenacity, legal acumen, and a personalized approach.
Zoe joined Augusta Chambers (formerly Blackstone Chambers) in December 2025.
Zoe can be instructed privately and is an approved legal aid provider in Criminal (PAL 2) and Civil (Prison Law) (Supervised Provider).
Outside of work, Zoe enjoys kayaking, bushwalking, and swimming, finding inspiration and balance in New Zealand's natural beauty. She also cherishes time with her animal companions, including her dog Broccoli, her cats Parsley and Rosemary, and her guinea pigs Peppermint, Chips, Chickpea and Panini.
